The History of Coffee in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, with origins traced back to the legend of Kaldi, a goat herder who discovered the energizing effects of coffee beans. Over time, coffee became central to Ethiopian culture and daily life. Guji, located in southern Ethiopia, is a relatively new coffee-growing region but has gained global recognition for its high-quality, specialty coffees. Grown at high over 2,000 meters in rich volcanic soil, Guji coffee is known for its floral, and tropical flavor notes.

In Guji, coffee is more than a crop — it’s a cultural tradition, reflected in Ethiopia’s famous coffee ceremonies. Today, Guji stands as one of the most respected regions in the specialty coffee world.

Features of Guji Specialty Coffee

Guji Ethiopian coffee is traditionally naturally processed, a method deeply rooted in Ethiopia’s coffee heritage. After the ripe cherries are carefully handpicked, they are laid out to dry under the sun on raised African beds—still intact with their fruit. This drying process can take several days to weeks, during which the cherries are regularly turned to ensure even drying and to prevent over-fermentation. The natural process allows the bean to absorb sugars and fruitiness from the cherry, resulting in a cup that bursts with vibrant notes of peach, berries, and jasmine, and a full-bodied, smooth texture. It’s this slow, sun-drenched journey that gives Guji coffee its bold character and unforgettable flavor.

At Marid Coffee, quality inspection, roasting, and packaging of the beans in single-valve bags are done daily to ensure that the coffee reaches our customers in the best condition.
